Beschreibung

A striking Post-Impressionist work by Paul Gauguin, featuring two figures in a Tahitian setting, rendered with bold outlines and a muted, earthy palette.

Terrible Words (Parau hano hano) is a work by Paul Gauguin, created during his first stay in Tahiti. The composition features two figures in a setting that blends observation with imagined narrative. A woman sits in the foreground, her back to the viewer, while another figure appears behind a tree, their expression suggesting a moment of tension or secret communication. The title, inscribed in the lower left corner, translates from Tahitian as 'terrible words' or 'gossip', hinting at the social dynamics Gauguin observed or projected onto his surroundings.

Gauguin employs a flat, decorative approach to space, rejecting traditional perspective in favour of bold outlines and simplified forms. The palette relies on earthy tones, punctuated by the blue of the seated figure's garment and the warm ochre of the ground. This work reflects the artist's interest in the synthesis of European aesthetic traditions and the visual culture he encountered in the South Pacific. The inclusion of the title within the composition itself is a characteristic device for Gauguin, who often integrated text to guide the viewer's interpretation of his scenes.

This piece demonstrates the artist's move away from the naturalism of his earlier career towards a more subjective, symbolic mode of representation. The figures are rendered with calligraphic lines, and the overall arrangement prioritises rhythmic patterns over anatomical precision. By flattening the pictorial plane, Gauguin creates a sense of detachment, inviting the viewer to consider the scene as a constructed image rather than a direct record of reality. The work remains an example of his experimentation with watercolour and ink, mediums that allowed for a fluid, immediate application of colour and form.

Artist Biography

Paul Gauguin

Eugène Henri Paul Gauguin (1848-1903) was a leading French Post-Impressionist artist whose bold experiments in colour and form synthesised a new, modern style. Though born in Paris, Gauguin spent his early childhood in Peru, an experience that instilled in him a lifelong wanderlust and a fascination with the exotic. He began his career as a stockbroker, only turning to art in his late twenties after being inspired by the Impressionists.

Gauguin soon rejected the Impressionist focus on objective representation, seeking instead to express subjective emotions and spiritual ideas through his art. This led him to develop a distinctive style characterised by flattened forms, simplified lines, and vibrant, non-naturalistic colours. Key works such as *Vision after the Sermon* (1888) exemplify this approach, showcasing his move towards Symbolism and Cloisonnism.

Frustrated with European society, Gauguin sought refuge in French Polynesia, where he created some of his most iconic paintings, including *Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going?* (1897-98). These works depict the beauty and mystery of Tahitian life, albeit through a lens that has since been critiqued for its romanticised and colonial gaze. Despite his controversial legacy, Paul Gauguin's innovative use of colour and his exploration of primal themes profoundly influenced the development of modern art.
