A 1794 woodblock print by Tōshūsai Sharaku, capturing the kabuki actor Yamashita Kinsaku II with the artist's signature focus on expressive, realistic features.
This woodblock print by Tōshūsai Sharaku depicts the kabuki actor Yamashita Kinsaku II in the role of the maid Ebizo Okane. Produced in 1794, the work belongs to a brief, ten-month period during which Sharaku created his most famous portraits of actors. The artist is known for his departure from the idealised depictions common in the ukiyo-e genre of the time. Instead, he employed a style of caricature that emphasised the specific facial features and expressions of the performers.
In this portrait, the actor is shown in a close-up, bust-length composition. The focus remains on the heavy, rounded contours of the face and the deliberate, somewhat stern expression. The use of a mica background, a technique known as kirara-e, provides a subtle, shimmering surface that draws attention to the figure. The colour palette is restrained, relying on muted earth tones and soft pinks to define the costume, which allows the stark black of the hair and the bold lines of the facial features to dominate the visual field.
Sharaku's approach to the kabuki stage was analytical. He captured the tension of the performance rather than the beauty of the actor. This print demonstrates his ability to convey character through posture and line. The figure is positioned with arms crossed, creating a sense of weight and presence. The calligraphy in the cartouche identifies the role and the actor, providing context for the theatrical performance. This print is a representative example of the artist's brief but intense contribution to the history of Japanese printmaking, offering a direct view into the aesthetic of the Edo period theatre.
