A detailed hanging scroll depicting ten Rakan gathered to observe a painting of the White-Robed Kannon, rendered in traditional ink and colour on silk.
This hanging scroll depicts a group of ten Rakan, the enlightened disciples of the Buddha, gathered in a moment of quiet contemplation. They are focused on a smaller scroll held by two figures, which displays an image of the White-Robed Kannon, the Bodhisattva of Compassion. The scene is set beneath a large, gnarled tree, providing a natural canopy for the figures. The artist, Katō Nobukiyo, employs a delicate brush technique to define the facial expressions and the varied textures of the monks' robes.
The composition is balanced, with the verticality of the tree trunk echoing the upright posture of the figures. The colour palette remains restrained, relying on soft earth tones, muted greens, and subtle reds, which align with the traditional aesthetic of late Edo period religious art. The Rakan are rendered with individualised features, suggesting a human quality to their spiritual pursuit. The inclusion of the smaller painting within the larger work creates a narrative layer, inviting the viewer to consider the act of observation and devotion itself.
Katō Nobukiyo was a painter active during the latter half of the eighteenth century. His work often reflects the synthesis of Chinese-influenced Buddhist iconography and the refined sensibilities of Japanese ink painting. The attention to detail in the drapery and the subtle shading of the figures demonstrate a high level of technical proficiency. This print captures the serene atmosphere of the original silk painting, preserving the tonal nuances and the precise line work that define Nobukiyo's approach to religious subject matter. It is a representative example of the period's interest in both spiritual themes and the technical mastery of the brush.
