A detailed 1876 oil painting by Marianne North depicting the tea-drying process at a plantation in Java, set against a mountainous backdrop.
Marianne North was a prolific Victorian traveller and painter who documented botanical specimens and industrial processes across the globe. This work captures the tea-drying process at a plantation in Java during her 1876 expedition. The composition provides a clear view of the labour-intensive methods used to prepare tea leaves, with workers tending to drying racks and sorting trays under the shadow of a volcanic peak.
North painted directly from observation, often working in challenging conditions to record the specific details of her surroundings. Her approach prioritised accuracy over artistic embellishment, resulting in a visual record that functions as both an ethnographic study and a personal travelogue. The scene depicts the rhythmic nature of the work, with figures distributed across the foreground and middle ground, engaged in the various stages of production. The mountainous backdrop provides a sense of scale, grounding the industrial activity within the specific geography of the Indonesian archipelago.
Unlike many of her contemporaries who focused on idealised or romanticised views of foreign lands, North maintained a focus on the reality of the environments she visited. Her work remains a valuable resource for understanding the global trade networks of the late nineteenth century. The palette reflects the earthy tones of the soil and the verdant greens of the surrounding vegetation, punctuated by the varied colours of the workers' clothing. This piece is part of the extensive collection North gifted to the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, where she oversaw the construction of a gallery to house her paintings. Her dedication to documenting the natural world and the human activities associated with it offers a direct window into the colonial era, presented with the clarity of a trained observer.
