A 1916 Orphist oil painting by Robert Delaunay, featuring a female figure integrated into a rhythmic composition of concentric circles and bold colours.
Robert Delaunay painted Tall Portuguese Woman in 1916 during his stay in Spain and Portugal. This work reflects his transition from the earlier Cubist style toward Orphism, a movement he co-founded with his wife, Sonia Delaunay. Orphism prioritised the use of pure colour and geometric forms to create a sense of rhythm and movement, moving away from the rigid, monochromatic structures of analytical Cubism.
The composition features a female figure integrated into a field of concentric circles and fragmented planes. Delaunay employs a high-chroma palette, using yellow, orange, blue, and green to construct the space. The figure of the woman, while recognisable, is partially dissolved into the surrounding geometric patterns. This technique allows the viewer to perceive the subject not as a static object, but as a participant in a dynamic optical environment. The circular motifs, often referred to as 'simultaneous discs', represent the artist's interest in the physics of light and the way colours interact when placed side by side.
In this piece, the botanical elements on the left balance the human figure on the right. The entire surface is treated with equal attention, avoiding a traditional hierarchy between foreground and background. The brushwork remains visible, adding a tactile quality to the otherwise mathematical arrangement of shapes. By 1916, Delaunay had moved toward a more decorative and rhythmic application of his theories, which is evident in the way the circles overlap and bleed into one another. This work captures the artist's pursuit of a universal language of form, where the subject matter serves as a vehicle for exploring the properties of light and colour perception.
