This handscroll, known as the Tale of a Strange Marriage or Konkai Zoshi, belongs to the Fukko Yamato-e movement, which sought to revive the classical painting styles of the Heian period. Ukita Ikkei, a Kyoto-based artist, was a central figure in this movement, often drawing inspiration from medieval narrative scrolls. The work depicts a fantastical scene where foxes, anthropomorphised in traditional court attire, engage in human-like social rituals.

The composition follows the traditional emaki format, designed to be viewed sequentially as the scroll is unrolled. The architectural elements, such as the wooden verandas and sliding screens, are rendered with precise, thin lines, providing a structured environment for the narrative. The foxes, depicted with a blend of animal features and human posture, wear formal robes and black court caps, suggesting a satirical or allegorical commentary on the rigid social hierarchies of the Edo period.

The colour palette is balanced, utilising soft earth tones for the ground and foliage, contrasted against the muted blues and greens of the architecture. The use of gold leaf at the top and bottom borders provides a frame that separates the narrative space from the viewer.
