Beschreibung
A classic woodblock print from Hiroshige's One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, depicting the serene river and cliffs of Ōji.
Takinogawa in Ōji is the 88th print from the series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, produced by Utagawa Hiroshige between 1856 and 1858. This specific work depicts the scenic area of Ōji, a location known for its natural beauty and the Shakujii River. Hiroshige employs a vertical composition to capture the steep, verdant cliffs that define the riverbank, contrasting the sharp verticality of the rock face with the gentle curve of the wooden bridge spanning the water.
The print features a small waterfall cascading into the river, where figures are depicted resting near a pavilion. The colour palette relies on deep greens for the foliage, earthy ochres for the rock formations, and varied blues for the water and sky. The sky transitions from a pale horizon to a darker tone at the top, a technique known as bokashi, which provides a sense of atmospheric depth. The inclusion of a small torii gate near the base of the cliff adds a layer of cultural context, indicating the presence of a shrine in this quiet, natural setting.
As a master of the Ukiyo-e tradition, Hiroshige focuses on the relationship between human activity and the natural environment. The figures are small, integrated into the scene rather than dominating it. The print demonstrates the artist's ability to organise complex spatial elements into a coherent image. The use of clear outlines and flat areas of colour is characteristic of the woodblock medium, allowing for the precise rendering of architectural details like the bridge and the pavilion alongside the organic shapes of the trees and cliffs. This work remains a clear example of the aesthetic priorities of the late Edo period, where the depiction of famous sites served both as a guide for travellers and as a celebration of the geography surrounding the capital.
