This woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicts the scenic Takinogawa area at Oji, a location historically favoured for its natural beauty and cooling waters during the summer months. Part of the series Famous Places in the Eastern Capital, the composition captures a moment of leisure along the Shakujii River.
In the foreground, figures relax on a wooden platform, while others swim in the river, providing a sense of scale and human activity against the natural environment. A simple wooden bridge spans the water, connecting the rocky banks. To the right, a small torii gate stands near a cave entrance, suggesting the presence of a shrine, which was common in such picturesque sites. The use of colour is restrained, relying on muted greens for the foliage and deep blues for the water, which creates a calm atmosphere.
Hiroshige employs a balanced composition, using the rocky outcrops to frame the scene and guide the eye towards the distant hills. The print demonstrates his ability to combine topographical observation with a stylised approach to nature. The sky is marked by horizontal bands of colour, a technique often used in his prints to suggest atmospheric conditions or the time of day. This work offers a glimpse into the recreational habits of Edo-period citizens, who sought respite from the heat in the outskirts of the city.
