Surviving Paintings and Calligraphy of Sengai - Sengai Gibon

This print originates from the Entsū Zenji iboku, a collection documenting the visual output of the Rinzai Zen monk Sengai Gibon. Sengai served as the abbot of Shōfuku-ji in Hakata and is recognised for his unconventional approach to ink painting. His work often subverts traditional religious iconography through humour, simplicity, and directness. This specific page displays the characteristic economy of line that defines his Zenga style.

The imagery features a figure riding a tiger, a common motif in Zen art representing the mastery of one's wild nature or the taming of the ego. Beside this, the depiction of bamboo demonstrates the artist's ability to capture the essence of a subject with minimal brushwork. The accompanying calligraphy is integrated into the composition, functioning as both a visual element and a carrier of philosophical meaning.
