A study of light and colour in a Parisian park, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1887 using his characteristic rhythmic brushwork.
Painted during his time in Paris, this work captures a quiet corner of a public park. Vincent van Gogh moved away from the darker palette of his earlier Dutch period, adopting the lighter, clearer tones favoured by the Impressionists and Neo-Impressionists he encountered in France. The composition focuses on the interplay of light across the grass, rendered through short, rhythmic brushstrokes that define the texture of the ground and the foliage.
The painting demonstrates his interest in colour theory, specifically the juxtaposition of complementary hues. The bright, lime-green lawn is balanced by the darker, cooler shadows cast by the trees, while the warmer tones of the foreground vegetation provide a visual anchor. The application of paint is thick and deliberate, a technique that allows the surface to catch the light and create a sense of physical depth. Unlike his later, more turbulent works, this piece maintains a sense of calm observation.
Van Gogh often visited the parks of Paris to study the effects of sunlight on natural forms. This specific view reflects his focus on the immediate environment, treating the mundane subject of a public lawn with careful attention to light and colour. The trees frame the scene, drawing the eye toward the centre of the composition where the sunlight hits the grass most directly. The work provides a clear view into his technical development during the late 1880s, as he experimented with the expressive potential of paint application and colour relationships. It remains a study of light and form, capturing a fleeting moment in a Parisian park with directness and clarity.
