A pair of traditional Japanese ink wash scrolls by Hayashi Hyakuhi, depicting the contrasting atmospheres of summer and winter.
This diptych by Hayashi Hyakuhi presents a study in seasonal contrast through the traditional medium of ink on silk. Hyakuhi, a practitioner of the Bunjinga (literati) style, employs monochromatic ink washes to evoke the atmospheric qualities of the natural world. The left scroll depicts a summer scene, where soft, misty mountains rise above a verdant valley. The brushwork here is fluid, using varying densities of ink to suggest the humidity and lush growth associated with the warmer months. A small structure sits quietly near a waterfall, providing a sense of scale and human presence within the vast terrain.
The right scroll shifts to a winter theme. The composition is more jagged and austere, reflecting the harshness of the colder season. Sharp, angular rock formations dominate the upper portion, while the trees below appear stripped and dormant. The ink application is drier and more deliberate, capturing the brittle texture of winter air. Both scrolls are mounted in the traditional kakejiku format, featuring decorative silk borders that frame the central imagery.
Hyakuhi follows the conventions of the literati tradition, which prioritised the expression of the artist's inner state through the mastery of brush and ink. The inclusion of calligraphy in the upper sections of both scrolls integrates text with image, a hallmark of this artistic school. These works demonstrate a disciplined approach to composition, balancing negative space with detailed ink work. The scrolls function as a pair, inviting the viewer to observe the cyclical nature of the seasons through a refined, monochromatic lens. This set provides an example of the technical skill required to manipulate ink on silk, where the absorbency of the material dictates the final clarity of the forms.
