A traditional ink-on-silk hanging scroll by Kano Hōgai, depicting a serene mountain scene inspired by the poetry of Su Shi.
Kano Hōgai was a central figure in the development of Nihonga, a movement that sought to modernise traditional Japanese painting techniques during the Meiji period. This hanging scroll depicts a scene inspired by the literary work of the Song dynasty poet Su Shi. The composition follows the vertical format of traditional East Asian ink painting, guiding the viewer from the foreground stream and stone bridge up through the wooded slopes to the towering, snow-dusted peaks.
The brushwork demonstrates the artist's mastery of ink wash techniques. Hōgai employs a range of tonal values to suggest the texture of the rock faces and the density of the pine forests. The inclusion of calligraphic text at the top of the scroll provides a narrative context, linking the visual imagery to the poetic tradition of the Red Cliff. The scene captures a quiet, contemplative atmosphere, typical of the literati style that Hōgai adapted throughout his career.
As a member of the Kano school, Hōgai was trained in the rigorous traditions of Japanese painting. However, his later work shows an interest in Western perspective and shading, which he integrated into his practice to create a distinct aesthetic. This piece reflects his ability to balance historical subject matter with a refined, personal approach to ink application. The work remains a clear example of the transition period in Japanese art, where artists navigated the influence of foreign styles while maintaining a connection to classical themes. The muted palette and focus on natural forms create a sense of stillness, inviting the viewer to engage with the narrative through the subtle interplay of light and shadow across the silk surface.
