A refined mid-eighteenth century Japanese woodblock print by Nishimura Shigenobu, featuring a graceful dancer and attendant in the benizuri-e style.
This woodblock print by Nishimura Shigenobu, an artist active during the mid-eighteenth century, captures a moment of theatrical elegance. The work belongs to the benizuri-e tradition, a style of colour printing that utilised a limited palette, typically featuring soft pinks and greens alongside black ink. The composition focuses on a tall, graceful figure, likely a performer or a character from the kabuki stage, accompanied by a smaller attendant.
Shigenobu, who was also known as Ishikawa Toyonobu, employed clean, fluid lines to define the silhouettes of the figures. The kimono patterns are rendered with precision, showing a preference for stylised floral motifs and water-inspired swirls. The use of negative space allows the viewer to focus on the interaction between the two figures, whose gazes suggest a narrative connection common in the ukiyo-e genre. The cartouche in the upper right corner provides the title, while the seal at the base confirms the artist's identity and the publisher's mark.
As a piece of Edo-period graphic art, this print reflects the aesthetic values of the urban merchant class. The figures possess the elongated proportions characteristic of Shigenobu's work, which moved away from the more robust forms seen in earlier ukiyo-e prints. The paper retains a warm, aged tone, typical of surviving impressions from this era. This print offers a glimpse into the fashion and cultural preoccupations of the time, where the theatre and its performers occupied a central position in popular visual culture. The balance between the bold black outlines and the subtle application of colour demonstrates the technical skill involved in early multi-block printing processes.
