A delicate charcoal and chalk study of a beach scene at Scheveningen, capturing the quiet leisure of the Dutch coast in 1913.
This work by Pieter Willem van Baarsel captures a quiet afternoon on the coast at Scheveningen. Executed in charcoal with subtle additions of coloured chalk, the drawing reflects the observational approach common among Dutch artists of the early twentieth century who frequented the North Sea resorts. The composition is anchored by a large wicker beach chair in the foreground, which provides a sense of scale and privacy for the figures resting nearby.
Van Baarsel employs a restrained palette, allowing the grey tone of the paper to function as the mid-tone for the sand and sky. The figures, dressed in the modest attire of the period, are rendered with economical lines. A woman reclines in the sand, while others stand or sit near the water, their forms suggested rather than fully detailed. The presence of bathing machines in the background provides historical context for the beach culture of the era, where such structures were necessary for changing in public view. The artist uses light touches of colour to draw the eye to specific details, such as the clothing of the figures, without disrupting the overall atmospheric quality of the scene.
The drawing is a study of light and leisure, focusing on the transient nature of a day by the sea. Van Baarsel avoids excessive detail, preferring to capture the mood of the environment through gesture and posture. The work is held within the collection of the Rijksmuseum, reflecting its status as a representative example of Dutch graphic art from this period. It offers a glimpse into the social habits of the Dutch coast, presented with a directness that characterises the artist's broader body of work.
