A classic Dutch Golden Age still life by Johannes Hannot, featuring a detailed arrangement of fruit, a silver platter, and a peeled lemon.
Johannes Hannot, a painter active in Leiden during the seventeenth century, produced this work in 1666. The composition follows the conventions of Dutch Golden Age still life painting, where the arrangement of perishable goods serves as a study of light, texture, and form. Hannot focuses on the tactile qualities of the fruit, from the translucent skin of the grapes to the porous surface of the peeled lemon.
The arrangement is set against a dark, neutral background, which directs the viewer's attention to the illuminated objects on the table. A silver platter holds the primary collection of fruit, including peaches, grapes, and a split fig. The lemon, partially peeled with its zest spiralling downwards, provides a sense of movement and depth to the foreground. To the left, a cluster of cherries hangs over the edge of the wooden table, adding a vertical element to the composition. A blue velvet cloth with a gold fringe is draped beneath the platter, introducing a soft, textile contrast to the smooth surfaces of the fruit.
Technically, the painting demonstrates the precision characteristic of the period. The artist employs a controlled palette, using the dark background to create a strong chiaroscuro effect. This technique allows the light to catch the moisture on the fruit and the metallic sheen of the platter. The inclusion of a glass vessel in the upper portion of the frame adds a further layer of complexity, as the artist captures the way light interacts with transparent materials. This work reflects the interest of Dutch painters in documenting the material world with scientific accuracy, while simultaneously creating a balanced and harmonious visual experience for the observer.
