A masterwork of the Dutch Golden Age, this 1658 oil painting by Willem van Aelst captures the textures of game birds with exceptional precision.
Willem van Aelst was a master of the Dutch Golden Age, particularly recognised for his technical precision in the genre of still life painting. This composition, dated 1658, demonstrates his ability to render textures with near-photographic accuracy. The painting depicts a collection of game birds suspended by their feet against a dark, atmospheric background. The contrast between the light-coloured plumage of the white bird and the darker, iridescent feathers of the rooster creates a sense of volume and physical presence.
Van Aelst utilised a refined technique, applying thin glazes to achieve the soft, downy quality of the feathers and the metallic sheen on the bird's wings. The birds rest upon a stone ledge, their forms arranged to lead the eye through the subtle variations in light and shadow. This work belongs to the tradition of hunting still lifes, a popular subject among the Dutch elite during the seventeenth century. Such paintings functioned as displays of wealth and status, reflecting the owner's access to game and the artist's skill in capturing the ephemeral nature of the subject matter.
The composition is balanced through the careful placement of the hanging birds and the slumped forms on the ledge. Van Aelst avoids excessive clutter, allowing the viewer to focus on the individual details of the anatomy and the play of light across the surfaces. The dark, neutral background serves to push the subjects forward, creating a sense of depth that is characteristic of his mature style. This print captures the sombre, quiet mood of the original oil painting, making it an appropriate addition to spaces where a focus on classical technique and historical subject matter is desired.
