Beschreibung
A haunting 1923 still life by Otto Dix, featuring a skeletal form draped in a widow's veil, dark irises, and a ghostly mask.
Otto Dix, a central figure of the New Objectivity movement in Weimar Germany, produced this work in 1923. The composition presents a stark, unsettling arrangement that departs from traditional still life conventions. A skeletal structure, draped in a black widow's veil, occupies the left side of the frame. This anatomical element serves as a direct reference to the mortality and trauma that defined the post-war period in Europe. Beside this, a glass pitcher holds dark irises, their deep blue tones contrasting with the pale, rumpled cloth beneath them.
Mounted on the wall above is a mask-like face, rendered in cool, ghostly hues. Its presence adds a psychological dimension to the scene, suggesting a detached observer or a lingering spirit. The background consists of a muted, wooden surface, which anchors the disparate objects in a confined, claustrophobic space. Dix employs a precise, almost clinical technique to depict these items, ensuring that every texture, from the brittle bone to the soft fabric of the veil, is rendered with clarity.
This painting avoids the sentimentality often associated with memento mori imagery. Instead, it offers a cold, analytical examination of death and mourning. The juxtaposition of organic floral life with the rigid, inanimate remains of a skeleton creates a tension that is characteristic of Dix's work during the 1920s. By stripping away decorative excess, the artist forces the viewer to confront the physical reality of loss. The work remains a significant example of how German artists of the era utilised traditional genres to process the societal collapse and personal grief that followed the First World War.
