Beschreibung
A modernist still life by Max Weber featuring domestic objects and fruit arranged across two tables. This oil painting uses heavy brushwork and a palette of earth tones to create a sense of physical weight.
Max Weber was a Russian-born American painter who introduced European modernism to the United States. This composition, Still Life with Two Tables, demonstrates his later interest in expressive realism and the structural lessons of Paul Cézanne. The scene features a collection of domestic objects arranged across two wooden surfaces at varying heights.
In the foreground, a dark wooden table holds a plate with bread and a black ceramic mug. A scalloped bowl containing a single piece of fruit sits nearby. A large terracotta jug with a wide mouth sits behind these objects, bridging the space between the lower table and a smaller pedestal table in the background. The upper surface supports a white compote dish filled with apples and pears. A pale blue and white cloth drapes over the right edge of the main table, adding a vertical element to the horizontal arrangement.
Weber uses a heavy application of paint and a palette dominated by earth tones. The ochre of the tables and the burnt orange of the jug contrast with the cool blues of the ceramics and the white highlights on the drapery. His brushwork is visible and energetic, defining forms through colour and weight rather than precise outlines. The perspective is slightly flattened, a technique that emphasises the physical presence of the objects within the shallow space.
The artist often returned to the theme of the still life to explore the relationship between everyday objects and the space they occupy. By using two tables, Weber creates a tiered effect that guides the eye through the composition. This work represents his transition away from his earlier Cubist experiments toward a more tactile and observational approach to painting. The result is a study of form and texture that remains grounded in the physical world.
