A 1914 still life by Roger Fry, demonstrating his focus on formal structure, geometric shapes, and the interplay of colour in Post-Impressionist painting.
Roger Fry, a central figure in the Bloomsbury Group and a critic who introduced Post-Impressionism to the British public, painted this still life in 1914. The composition demonstrates his interest in the formal qualities of objects rather than their narrative or sentimental value. Fry arranges a dark, slender bottle, a cylindrical white vessel, and a glass of water against a flat, ochre-toned background. To the left, a patterned fabric adds a vertical element, breaking the horizontal plane of the table.
The painting reflects Fry's engagement with the theories of Cézanne and the Fauves. He prioritises the structural relationships between the objects and the surrounding space. The colour palette is deliberate, using the deep blue of the bottle to anchor the composition against the warm, golden-yellow wall. The brushwork is controlled, focusing on the volume and weight of the items. Fry often included items from his own collection in his paintings, such as the T'ang dynasty ceramic horse that appears in other works from this period, though it is absent from this specific frame, suggesting the title refers to the broader series or the specific collection context of his studio.
By 1914, Fry had moved away from the traditional academic approach to painting. He sought to create a sense of order through colour and shape. The objects are rendered with a degree of simplification that emphasises their geometric properties. This work provides a clear example of his application of formalist principles, where the arrangement of shapes and the interplay of light and shadow take precedence over realistic detail. It is a study in balance, demonstrating how everyday items can be transformed into a coherent visual structure through the application of modern artistic theory.
