A 1962 still life by Giorgio de Chirico, featuring a classical bust, silver vessels, and fruit arranged in a theatrical, stage-like setting.
Giorgio de Chirico, a figure associated with the Metaphysical Art movement, produced this still life in 1962. The composition features a collection of objects arranged upon a white cloth, set against a dark background draped with heavy red curtains. Central to the arrangement is a classical marble bust, a recurring motif in the artist's later work, which provides a sense of historical weight and stillness. Beside the bust, a silver coffee pot rests upon a leather-bound book, draped with a green cloth that adds a sharp chromatic contrast to the scene.
The painting demonstrates the artist's technical focus on the reflective qualities of metal and the textures of fruit. Oranges and other citrus fruits are placed in ornate silver vessels, their rounded forms echoing the curves of the metallic containers. The lighting is theatrical, casting clear shadows that define the volume of each object while maintaining a sense of artificiality. De Chirico often returned to traditional subjects during his later career, applying a meticulous, almost academic technique that differed from his earlier, more enigmatic Metaphysical paintings.
This work reflects the artist's interest in the dialogue between antiquity and the modern era. By placing a classical sculpture alongside domestic items, he creates a scene that feels removed from time. The precision in the rendering of the silver surfaces and the folds of the fabric reveals a disciplined approach to the medium. The dark, stage-like setting draws the viewer's attention to the objects, which appear as if they are actors in a silent, static performance. This piece offers a view into the artist's mature style, where technical skill and a fascination with the past converge in a controlled, deliberate manner.
