Juan Gris, born José Victoriano González-Pérez, was a central figure in the development of Cubism. This work, dating from 1912, captures the artist's early engagement with the analytical phase of the movement. During this period, Gris moved away from the monochromatic palettes often favoured by his contemporaries, Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, to explore a more structured approach to form and light.
