Abraham Mignon, a German-born painter active in the Dutch Republic, produced this work during the height of the Dutch Golden Age. The composition features a complex arrangement of fruit, including grapes, peaches, and figs, alongside a distinctive nautilus cup supported by a metal base shaped like a bird's claw. This specific type of vessel, often referred to as a 'hanenpoot' or cock's foot cup, was a prized object in seventeenth-century collections, demonstrating the owner's access to exotic materials and fine craftsmanship.

The painting employs a dark, moody background that pushes the illuminated objects into the foreground. Mignon uses a precise technique to render the textures of the fruit skins, the translucent quality of the grapes, and the reflective surfaces of the glassware. A peeled lemon, a common motif in Dutch still life painting, sits on the edge of the stone ledge, its spiral peel adding a sense of movement to the otherwise static arrangement.
