A 1906 oil painting by James Ensor featuring a collection of masks, fans, and ceramics arranged on a bright blue cloth.
James Ensor, a central figure in the development of modern Belgian art, produced this work in 1906. The composition centres on a collection of objects that reflect the artist's fascination with the exotic and the grotesque. A bright blue cloth drapes over the table, providing a base for a yellow mask, a blue vase, and various fans. The inclusion of these items, often referred to as chinoiseries, demonstrates the late nineteenth and early twentieth-century European interest in East Asian aesthetics.
Ensor employs a palette that balances saturated blues against warmer ochre tones. The background appears somewhat flattened, pushing the objects forward and creating a sense of crowded space. The mask, a recurring motif in Ensor's oeuvre, introduces an unsettling element to the domestic scene. It disrupts the traditional expectations of a still life, moving the work away from mere representation toward a more subjective, psychological interpretation of objects.
Unlike his earlier, more sombre works, this painting displays a lighter, more experimental approach to colour and form. The brushwork is visible and energetic, contributing to the overall sense of movement within the static arrangement. Ensor often used his studio in Ostend as a repository for such curiosities, and this painting acts as a record of his personal environment. By placing these disparate items together, he creates a dialogue between the familiar and the strange. The work remains an example of how Ensor integrated his interest in carnival imagery and global decorative arts into his practice, maintaining a distinct visual language throughout his career.
