Beschreibung
A 1955 expressionist still life by Irma Stern, featuring a traditional African ceramic vessel, fresh fish, and lemons.
Irma Stern, a central figure in South African modernism, produced this still life in 1955. The composition centres on a traditional African ceramic vessel, positioned alongside a cluster of fish and halved lemons resting upon a wooden board. A white cloth drapes over the pot, creating a soft contrast against the earthy tones of the pottery and the metallic sheen of the fish. Stern employs a confident, gestural application of paint, characteristic of her expressionist approach.
Her work often integrated indigenous objects into domestic settings, reflecting her interest in the material culture of the regions she visited during her travels across the African continent. The brushwork is visible and direct, prioritising the physical presence of the objects over photographic accuracy. The palette remains grounded in natural hues, with the yellow of the lemons providing a sharp visual counterpoint to the muted greys and browns of the fish and ceramic. The background is rendered in a pale, atmospheric tone, which allows the foreground elements to occupy the space with weight and clarity.
Stern studied in Germany during the early twentieth century, where she encountered the work of the German Expressionists. This influence is evident in her use of colour and her rejection of academic finish. She returned to South Africa in 1920, where she developed a distinct visual language that merged European modernist techniques with the subjects and textures of her home country. This particular piece demonstrates her ability to elevate everyday objects through a focus on form, texture, and the tactile quality of oil paint. The arrangement is balanced yet retains a sense of spontaneity, capturing a moment of domestic preparation with an emphasis on the materiality of the items depicted.
