A classic Dutch Golden Age still life featuring a golden goblet, lobster, and fruit, rendered with meticulous detail and dramatic lighting.
Pieter de Ring was a Dutch painter active in Leiden during the seventeenth century. He specialised in the pronkstilleven, or ostentatious still life, a genre that displays the wealth and global trade connections of the Dutch Republic. This work features a collection of luxury items arranged upon a table draped in a deep blue velvet cloth. The composition is anchored by a prominent golden goblet, which serves as a display of the artist's ability to render reflective surfaces and metallic textures.
To the right, a cooked lobster provides a sharp contrast in colour against the cool tones of the grapes and the dark background. The inclusion of peeled citrus, oysters, and bread suggests a meal of high status. De Ring often included a ring as a personal signature, a visual pun on his surname, which can be observed resting on the table surface. The lighting is dramatic, emerging from the left to illuminate the textures of the fruit, the silver dish, and the intricate metalwork of the goblet, while the background remains obscured by heavy drapery.
This painting demonstrates the technical precision common to the Leiden school of painters. The artist balances the arrangement through the careful placement of the basket of grapes and the verticality of the goblet. The attention to detail, from the translucent skin of the grapes to the spiral of the lemon peel, reflects the period's fascination with the material world. By grouping these objects, the artist invites the viewer to observe the textures and light effects that define the Dutch Golden Age tradition of painting.
