A 1603 ink and wash study by Pieter Lastman, depicting a figure in a turban against a coastal background.
This drawing by Pieter Lastman, dated 1603, demonstrates the artist's early interest in the narrative and exotic subjects that would define his career. Lastman, who is often associated with the training of Rembrandt, travelled to Italy early in his life, and this work reflects the influence of the Italianate style on Dutch draughtsmanship during the seventeenth century. The figure, dressed in a turban and flowing robes, stands in a pose that suggests a traveller or a character from a biblical or historical scene. The use of pen and brown ink provides a clear structure to the form, while the application of grey wash adds volume and atmospheric depth to the composition.
The background includes a coastal setting with ships and small figures, which provides context to the central subject. The sketch-like quality of the background elements contrasts with the more defined rendering of the standing figure. Lastman employs a calligraphic line quality, typical of his period, to define the folds of the drapery and the contours of the body. The paper shows signs of age, which complements the sepia tones of the ink and the muted blue-grey washes. This work is a clear example of the preparatory studies produced by Dutch masters to explore composition and character before committing to larger paintings. It offers a view into the technical process of an artist who played a role in the development of the Dutch history painting tradition.
