A 1603 figure study by Pieter Lastman, featuring a traveller in a turban rendered in pen, ink, and wash.
This drawing by Pieter Lastman, dated 1603, provides a clear example of the artist's early work during his formative years. Lastman, who is often recognised for his influence on Rembrandt, travelled to Italy early in his career, where he absorbed the stylistic conventions of the Italian Renaissance and the emerging Baroque movement. This particular study demonstrates his interest in exoticism and historical narrative, themes that frequently appeared in his larger oil paintings.
The figure is depicted in a frontal pose, wearing a turban and loose-fitting garments that suggest a non-European setting. Lastman employs a combination of pen and brown ink for the primary contours, supplemented by grey and brown washes to define the volume of the clothing and the atmospheric depth of the background. The background itself features a coastal scene with small vessels, which adds a sense of travel and discovery to the composition. The use of a walking stick and the figure's direct gaze suggest a traveller or a character from a biblical or classical narrative, which were common subjects for the artist.
Technically, the work reveals the artist's focus on line quality and the application of wash to create shadow. The lines are fluid, showing the confidence of a young draughtsman. The paper shows signs of age, which adds to the character of the piece as a historical document. This study is representative of the Dutch tradition of figure drawing, where artists would often sketch characters to populate their more complex historical or mythological scenes. It remains a fine example of the preparatory methods used by artists in the early seventeenth century to develop their visual vocabulary.
