A modernist graphite study by Elemér de Kóródy, featuring a figure deconstructed into angular, Cubist-inspired geometric planes.
This graphite study by Elemér de Kóródy captures the human form through the lens of early twentieth-century European modernism. Kóródy, a Hungarian artist who spent time in Paris, adopted the geometric vocabulary of Cubism to deconstruct the figure into a series of angular planes and intersecting lines. The drawing demonstrates a focus on structural reduction, where the subject is no longer a realistic representation but a collection of rhythmic shapes and shadows.
The artist employs a confident, sketch-like line quality to define the torso and limbs. By breaking the body into faceted segments, Kóródy creates a sense of movement and volume on the two-dimensional surface. The shading is achieved through parallel hatching, which adds depth to the composition without relying on traditional modelling. The figure appears to occupy a space defined by these same geometric constraints, suggesting an environment that is as fragmented as the subject itself.
This work reflects the broader experimentation with form that defined the Parisian art scene during the early 1900s. Kóródy uses the contrast between the dark graphite marks and the warm, neutral tone of the paper to draw attention to the interplay of light and dark across the figure. The signature and location, inscribed at the bottom, place the work within the context of his time in France, where he engaged with the avant-garde movements of the era. This piece offers a clear look at the analytical approach to drawing that characterised the period, prioritising the internal logic of the composition over anatomical accuracy. It is a study of balance, tension, and the simplification of the human silhouette into its most essential geometric components.
