Standing Courtesan - Kaigetsudō Ando

A classic Ukiyo-e hanging scroll painting by Kaigetsudō Ando, featuring a monumental standing courtesan in a kimono decorated with bamboo motifs.

This work represents the distinctive style of the Kaigetsudō school, which flourished in the early eighteenth century. Kaigetsudō Ando, the founder of this group, focused almost exclusively on the depiction of bijin, or beautiful women, specifically courtesans from the Yoshiwara pleasure district. The composition follows the school's signature format: a single, monumental figure occupying the vertical space of the scroll. The figure is rendered with bold, sweeping outlines that define the heavy folds of the kimono, creating a sense of volume and physical presence.

The courtesan is shown in a three-quarter view, her posture suggesting a slow, deliberate movement. Her attire is decorated with bamboo motifs, which contrast with the solid blocks of colour in the undergarments. The artist employs a limited palette, allowing the calligraphic quality of the ink lines to dictate the visual rhythm of the piece. The background remains largely unadorned, ensuring the viewer focuses entirely on the figure's posture and the pattern of her clothing.

Unlike later Ukiyo-e artists who often incorporated complex domestic settings or atmospheric effects, Ando and his followers prioritised the iconic representation of the courtesan as a fashion plate of the Edo period. The figure's face is stylised, featuring the narrow eyes and small mouth characteristic of the school's aesthetic. This print captures the essence of the Kaigetsudō approach, where the emphasis is placed on the grace of the pose and the decorative potential of the textile patterns. The inclusion of a poem in the upper section provides a textual balance to the visual weight of the figure, a common feature in Japanese hanging scrolls of this era.
