This hanging scroll depicts a bijin, or beautiful woman, a subject central to the Ukiyo-e tradition of the Edo period. Kondo Katsunobu employs a refined aesthetic, focusing on the figure's posture and the decorative qualities of her attire. The woman stands in a gentle curve, her body angled to display the elaborate design of her kimono. The garment is rendered in a deep, dark tone, which provides a contrast to the lighter silk background and the subtle red lining visible at the hem.
The kimono features rectangular panels containing calligraphic inscriptions, a stylistic choice that integrates literature with visual art. This technique suggests the subject is a woman of culture, perhaps a courtesan or a performer from the pleasure districts of the era. The artist uses thin, controlled lines to define the facial features and the folds of the fabric, maintaining a sense of grace and composure. The composition is balanced, with the figure occupying the majority of the vertical space, typical of the hanging scroll format intended for display in a tokonoma, or alcove.
Katsunobu's approach to the figure is characteristic of early to mid-eighteenth-century Japanese painting.
