The print captures the monument shortly after its unveiling in 1852. The composition focuses on the statue, which stands upon a high pedestal, surrounded by a protective iron railing. The surrounding urban environment is rendered with precision, showing the characteristic gabled architecture of Amsterdam and the daily activity of the square. Figures in period attire populate the foreground, providing a sense of scale and social context to the scene.
The print was produced by G. G. Lange in Darmstadt, a firm known for its topographical and architectural engravings. The technique employed here relies on fine, controlled lines to create tonal variations, allowing for a clear representation of both the sculptural form and the atmospheric conditions of the city. The sky is rendered with subtle shading, suggesting a soft, diffused light typical of the Dutch climate.
