A German Renaissance depiction of Saint John the Evangelist receiving a vision of the Virgin and Child on the island of Patmos.
Hans Baldung, also known as Baldung Grien, produced this depiction of Saint John the Evangelist during his period in Freiburg. The composition follows the traditional iconography of the saint on the island of Patmos, where he is shown recording his visions. Baldung places the saint in the foreground, seated upon the ground, dressed in a red robe with his characteristic attribute, the eagle, positioned nearby.
In the upper left, the Virgin and Child appear within a mandorla of clouds, supported by a crescent moon. This celestial vision contrasts with the earthly setting of the saint. The background features a rocky outcrop and a distant view of water, typical of the German Renaissance interest in combining religious narrative with naturalistic observation. Baldung employs a clear, linear style, reflecting his training in the workshop of Albrecht Dürer. The figures exhibit the elongated proportions and expressive facial features that define his personal approach to the human form.
The colour palette is dominated by the contrast between the cool blue of the Virgin's mantle and the warm, saturated red of Saint John's garments. The golden light surrounding the celestial figures provides a luminous counterpoint to the darker, earthy tones of the foreground. Baldung's work often displays a fascination with the supernatural and the visionary, and this painting captures the moment of divine inspiration with precision. The attention to the texture of the drapery and the specific rendering of the foliage demonstrates the technical skill expected of a master of the period. This print reproduces the original panel, maintaining the clarity of the composition and the specific tonal relationships established by the artist in the early sixteenth century.
