A refined ink wash painting by Mochizuki Gyokusen, featuring two squirrels interacting with bamboo and rock in the Maruyama-Shijo style.
This work by Mochizuki Gyokusen, a prominent figure of the Maruyama-Shijo school, demonstrates the characteristic focus on natural observation combined with traditional ink wash techniques. The composition features two squirrels, one perched upon a weathered rock and another climbing a stalk of bamboo. The artist employs varying densities of ink to suggest the soft texture of the squirrels' fur, contrasting this with the sharper, more deliberate strokes used to define the bamboo leaves and the solid mass of the rock.
The Maruyama-Shijo school emerged in Kyoto during the Edo period, prioritising a direct study of nature over the rigid stylistic conventions of the Kano school. Gyokusen, who was a student of Maruyama Okyo, adopted this approach, resulting in works that possess a sense of immediacy and life. The use of negative space, or ma, is essential here, allowing the viewer to focus on the interaction between the animals and their environment without unnecessary distraction.
The ink wash technique, known as suibokuga, relies on the control of water and pigment to create tonal gradations. In this piece, the artist uses these gradations to model the forms of the squirrels, giving them a three-dimensional quality despite the two-dimensional medium. The bamboo, rendered with quick, confident brushwork, provides a vertical counterpoint to the rounded forms of the rock and the animals. This hanging scroll format is typical of the period, designed to be displayed in a tokonoma, or alcove, where it would serve as a seasonal or thematic element within the home. The inscription on the left provides context regarding the date of creation, placing the work within the Bunsei era of Japanese history.
