Beschreibung
A striking example of Helen Frankenthaler's soak-stain technique, featuring fluid fields of teal and grey punctuated by bold, gestural strokes of red.
Square One is a representative example of Helen Frankenthaler's approach to the canvas during the mid-twentieth century. As a practitioner of the soak-stain technique, Frankenthaler thinned her pigments with turpentine, allowing the colour to permeate the raw fabric rather than sitting atop the surface. This method creates a sense of atmospheric depth, where the paint appears to exist within the weave of the material itself.
The composition features a central, dense accumulation of pigment, contrasted against expansive, cooler fields of teal and grey. A bold, curved stroke of red dominates the upper portion, providing a counterpoint to the more fluid, washed-out areas below. The inclusion of thin, gestural white lines introduces a graphic element that disrupts the softness of the stained fields. These lines suggest a spontaneous, almost calligraphic energy, typical of the artist's work from this period.
Frankenthaler's practice shifted the focus of painting away from the heavy impasto associated with earlier abstract artists. By prioritising the interaction between fluid colour and the physical support, she achieved a balance between controlled composition and the unpredictable nature of the medium. The work avoids rigid structure, instead relying on the tension between the saturated forms and the negative space surrounding them. This piece captures the transition from the gestural intensity of the 1950s toward the more meditative, expansive qualities of later colour field painting. The viewer is invited to observe the interplay of light and pigment, where the boundaries between form and background remain porous and undefined.
