A stylised depiction of the Iowa countryside, featuring rhythmic, rolling hills and the geometric patterns of ploughed fields in early spring.
Grant Wood, a central figure of the American Regionalist movement, produced Spring Turning in 1936. The work depicts the rolling hills of Iowa during the early agricultural season. Wood employs a highly stylised approach, reducing the terrain to a series of smooth, geometric curves and contrasting colour blocks. The deep green of the pastures meets the dark, freshly ploughed earth in a manner that suggests a carefully ordered, almost artificial environment.
In the lower left, a small figure guides a team of horses, providing a sense of scale to the vast, undulating topography. The composition is notable for its lack of traditional atmospheric perspective. Instead, Wood treats the scene with a clarity that borders on the surreal. The clouds, arranged in rhythmic, rounded formations across the horizon, echo the shapes of the hills below. This repetition creates a sense of harmony and stillness, characteristic of Wood's mature style.
By focusing on the agrarian life of the American Midwest, Wood sought to capture a sense of place that felt distinct from the urbanised centres of the East Coast. The painting is executed on masonite, a material that allowed the artist to achieve the hard-edged, polished finish seen here. The absence of brushstrokes contributes to the overall sense of detachment and precision. While the subject is rooted in the physical reality of farming, the execution leans towards abstraction, prioritising form and pattern over literal representation. The result is a vision of the countryside that feels both familiar and strangely dreamlike, reflecting the artist's interest in the intersection of memory and observation.
