A classical depiction of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, painted by Nicolas Poussin as part of his final series, The Four Seasons.
Spring (The Earthly Paradise) is one of four paintings in the series The Four Seasons, commissioned by the Duc de Richelieu towards the end of the life of Nicolas Poussin. This work depicts the biblical narrative of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. Poussin constructs a scene defined by order and classical restraint, rather than the chaotic drama often associated with the Baroque period. The composition is anchored by a dense arrangement of trees and rocky outcrops, which frame the central figures of Adam and Eve. They are shown in a moment of quiet interaction, situated beneath the fruit-laden branches of the tree of knowledge.
The background recedes into a soft, atmospheric distance, where a stream winds through a verdant plain towards distant mountains. Above, a figure representing the Creator appears within a cloud, gesturing towards the couple. The palette is dominated by earthy greens, ochres, and the clear blue of the sky, reflecting the artist's interest in natural light and atmospheric perspective. Poussin employs a measured approach to the human form, drawing upon his study of antique sculpture to imbue the figures with a sense of gravity and permanence.
This painting demonstrates the artist's mastery of the heroic style, where the natural world is organised to mirror a moral or theological order. The foliage is rendered with careful attention to individual leaf structures and light patterns, creating a sense of depth that draws the viewer into the scene. As a late work, it shows a simplification of form and a focus on the clarity of the narrative, moving away from the more complex compositions of his earlier career. The work remains a primary example of French classicism, demonstrating the intellectual rigour Poussin applied to his subjects.
