Terry Frost, a central figure in the St Ives School, produced this work during his later career. The composition features a large central spiral surrounded by a grid of smaller, individual spiral motifs. Each unit functions as an independent study of colour and movement. Frost often drew inspiration from the Cornish coast, where the rhythm of the sea and the light of the Atlantic informed his geometric abstraction.

The work demonstrates his interest in the interaction between simple shapes and chromatic relationships. By placing a dominant, large-scale spiral against a field of smaller, varied iterations, Frost creates a sense of visual tension. The lines are applied with a deliberate, rhythmic quality, suggesting the physical act of painting. The palette is diverse, utilising both primary and secondary hues to create a sense of balance across the grid structure.

Frost began his artistic training while a prisoner of war, later studying at the Camberwell School of Art. His move to St Ives in 1946 brought him into contact with artists such as Ben Nicholson and Barbara Hepworth. This environment encouraged his shift towards pure abstraction. Unlike his earlier works, which often retained traces of representational form, this piece focuses entirely on the geometry of the spiral. It reflects his ongoing investigation into how colour and line can occupy space without the need for figurative reference.
