A detailed lithograph by Thomas Hearne from 1805, showcasing the artist's precise linear technique in depicting a gnarled oak tree.
This print originates from the early nineteenth-century publication 'Specimens of Polyautography', a collection intended to demonstrate the potential of the then-new medium of lithography. Thomas Hearne, a draughtsman known for his topographical work, applied his precise pen-and-ink technique to the stone. The image focuses on the gnarled form of an ancient oak tree, rendered with a density of line that mimics the appearance of a copperplate etching.
Hearne uses varied hatching to define the texture of the bark and the volume of the foliage. The composition balances the heavy, weathered trunk against a lighter, atmospheric background. A small, distant structure is visible near the horizon, providing a sense of scale and depth to the scene. The artist avoids the smooth tonal washes often associated with later lithographic practice, preferring instead a graphic, linear approach that reflects his background in watercolour and ink drawing.
Polyautography, as it was initially termed, allowed artists to draw directly onto stone, bypassing the need for an engraver to interpret their work. This print captures a moment of technical experimentation in British art history. Hearne's ability to translate his observational skills into this medium demonstrates the adaptability of his style. The work remains a clear example of how early lithographers sought to replicate the aesthetic qualities of traditional printmaking while exploring the unique possibilities of the new chemical process.
