Beschreibung
A 1898 portrait by Gustav Klimt featuring Sonja Knips in a soft pink gown, capturing the elegance of the Vienna Secession period.
Painted in 1898, this portrait of Sonja Knips marks a transition in the career of Gustav Klimt. It is one of his earliest commissions for the Viennese bourgeoisie, capturing the subject in a moment of quiet composure. Knips, a member of a prominent industrialist family, is depicted seated in a chair, wearing a voluminous, pale pink gown that dominates the lower half of the composition. The dress is rendered with soft, feathery brushwork, creating a sense of ethereal texture that contrasts with the more defined features of her face.
Klimt employs a dark, atmospheric background that pushes the figure forward. To the upper right, a cluster of white flowers provides a decorative element, hinting at the ornamental style that would later define his work. Unlike his later gold-leaf portraits, this piece retains a more traditional approach to light and shadow, yet it avoids the rigid formality of academic portraiture. The focus remains on the psychological presence of the sitter, whose direct gaze engages the viewer. The muted colour palette, dominated by the soft pink of the dress and the deep, shadowy tones of the interior, creates a sense of intimacy.
This work was produced shortly after Klimt helped found the Vienna Secession, a group of artists who broke away from the conservative Künstlerhaus. While the painting reflects the influence of international styles such as Impressionism and Symbolism, it remains distinctly Viennese in its elegance. The composition is balanced, with the light fabric of the dress acting as a counterpoint to the dark void on the left. It provides a clear view into the aesthetic preferences of the Viennese elite at the turn of the century, documenting both the fashion of the period and the emerging modern sensibility of the artist.

Artist Biography
Gustav Klimt
Klimt’s most iconic works, including The Kiss, Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I, and The Tree of Life, exemplify his unique approach to the human form, celebrating beauty, femininity, and eroticism with bold lines and richly layered textures. His so-called "Golden Phase," marked by the use of gold and silver leaf, was heavily inspired by Byzantine mosaics he saw in Ravenna. During this time, Klimt created some of his most celebrated masterpieces, blending fine art with decorative elements in ways that challenged the conventions of both.
Beyond his visual style, Klimt’s influence extended into the broader currents of European art and design. As a mentor and collaborator, he supported younger artists such as Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoschka, and contributed to the rise of modernism in Austria. His work continues to resonate today for its emotional depth, sensuality, and fusion of fine art with decorative tradition. Klimt’s legacy is felt not only in painting but in fashion, interior design, and contemporary visual culture around the world.
