A refined Ming Dynasty ink and colour painting depicting a scene from the classic poem, Song of the Lute, by Ding Yunpeng.
Ding Yunpeng, a prominent figure of the late Ming Dynasty, produced this work reflecting the refined aesthetic of the period. The composition draws inspiration from the famous poem by Bai Juyi, which recounts a chance encounter between a government official and a lute player on the Xunyang River. Ding Yunpeng employs a delicate brushwork style, characteristic of his training in the Anhui school, to render the figures and the natural environment.
The scene depicts a quiet moment of musical performance. Two boats rest upon the water, their forms rendered with precise, thin lines. The figures within are captured in moments of contemplation and listening. On the shore, a horse grazes near a group of trees, providing a sense of scale and grounding the scene in a specific, observable reality. The use of colour is restrained, relying on soft tones that harmonise with the ink wash to create a sense of atmospheric depth.
Ding Yunpeng was known for his ability to balance technical precision with a sense of narrative clarity. His work often features figures with distinct facial expressions and postures, suggesting a focus on human character within the broader context of the natural world. The pine trees, with their textured bark and layered needles, demonstrate the artist's attention to botanical detail, a common feature in his oeuvre. This print captures the subtle interplay between the human subjects and their surroundings, offering a glimpse into the scholarly pursuits and artistic sensibilities of the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries in China. The composition avoids excessive ornamentation, favouring a balanced arrangement that guides the viewer across the riverbank and towards the central musical exchange.
