This print, titled Soldaten leven / Vie militaire, is a characteristic example of the popular imagery produced by the Belgian firm Glenisson & Zonen during the mid-19th century. These sheets were mass-produced for a broad audience, often sold by pedlars or at local markets. The composition follows a grid format, presenting twelve distinct vignettes that narrate the daily experiences of a soldier. Each scene is accompanied by bilingual text in Dutch and French, providing a rhythmic, poetic account of military life, ranging from mundane guard duties to the chaos of combat and the grim reality of desertion.
The visual style is defined by bold, simplified woodcut lines, typical of the period's commercial printing techniques.
