This print originates from the Soken Landscape Picture Album (Soken sansui gafu), a collection of woodblock-printed designs by the Japanese artist Yamaguchi Soken. Active during the Edo period, Soken was a student of Maruyama Okyo and a notable figure within the Shijo school of painting. This school prioritised direct observation of nature, combined with the technical precision of traditional ink wash methods.
The composition displays a characteristic economy of line. The artist uses varying ink densities to define the gnarled texture of the tree and the solid mass of the rock. The right panel features a tree with twisted branches, rendered with bold, expressive strokes that suggest age and resilience. The left panel provides a counterpoint, focusing on a large rock formation accompanied by sparse bamboo stalks. The negative space is utilised to suggest depth and atmosphere, a common feature in Japanese woodblock printing of this era.
