A serene Bunjinga hanging scroll by Sakaki Hyakusen, depicting a winter scene with ink washes on silk.
Sakaki Hyakusen, a pioneer of the Bunjinga (literati painting) movement in Japan, produced this work in 1744. The composition follows the traditional hanging scroll format, presenting a winter scene defined by the quietude of snow-covered terrain. Hyakusen utilised ink washes to establish the atmospheric depth of the mountains, while delicate brushwork defines the trees and architectural elements in the foreground.
The Bunjinga style, inspired by Chinese literati traditions, prioritised the personal expression of the artist over strict adherence to academic realism. In this piece, the artist employs a restrained palette, allowing the negative space of the silk to represent the snow. The vertical orientation guides the eye from the small dwellings nestled near the water, upward through the pine trees, and into the towering, abstract forms of the peaks. This verticality is a hallmark of the period, reflecting a desire to capture the essence of a scene rather than its literal appearance.
Hyakusen was instrumental in introducing the Southern School of Chinese painting to the Kyoto art scene. His approach to brushwork, particularly in the rendering of rock formations and foliage, demonstrates a synthesis of Japanese aesthetic sensibilities with the philosophical underpinnings of Chinese literati art. The inclusion of subtle colour touches on the buildings provides a point of contrast against the monochrome environment. This print captures the original silk texture and the nuanced ink gradations of the scroll, offering a clear view of the artist's calligraphic technique. It is a representative example of the early development of the literati style in eighteenth-century Japan, showing the transition toward more individualistic modes of representation.
