A detailed 18th-century etching depicting the supplication of Saint Roch amidst a plague-stricken scene, showcasing dramatic Baroque composition and fine line work.
This etching, titled Smeekbede van de heilige Rochus, depicts a scene of profound human suffering and divine intervention. The composition is structured around the figure of Saint Roch, who is traditionally invoked for protection against the plague. The artist, Leonard Schenk, employs a precise etching technique to render the chaotic and desperate atmosphere of a city afflicted by disease. In the foreground, figures are shown in states of exhaustion and illness, their bodies draped across the ground. A central child figure stands amidst the suffering, providing a stark contrast to the surrounding misery. Above, the heavens open to reveal a celestial presence, offering a spiritual counterpoint to the earthly tragedy below.
The work draws upon the visual language of the Dutch Baroque, utilising dramatic light and shadow to guide the viewer through the crowded scene. The architectural elements, including the arched structure on the left, provide a sense of place, while the figures are arranged to create a narrative flow from the foreground victims to the divine figures in the upper register. Schenk demonstrates a mastery of line, using varied hatching to define the textures of fabric, skin, and the atmospheric clouds. The print reflects the period's interest in religious iconography as a means of processing collective trauma and seeking hope during times of crisis. The composition is based on an invention by Gérard de Lairesse, with the etching executed by Jan Glauber, as indicated by the inscriptions at the base of the plate. This collaborative approach was common in the production of high-quality prints during the eighteenth century, allowing for the dissemination of complex historical and religious narratives to a wider audience. The work remains a compelling example of the technical skill and thematic depth characteristic of the era's printmaking tradition.
