A late-career abstract work by Francis Picabia, featuring luminous orange orbs set against a deep, textured violet background.
Small Sun belongs to the later period of Francis Picabia, a time when the artist moved away from his earlier Dadaist and Surrealist experiments towards a more gestural, abstract mode of expression. During the late 1940s, Picabia produced a series of works characterised by thick impasto and a sombre, atmospheric palette. This piece reflects that shift, focusing on the interplay of texture and light rather than representational form.
The composition is dominated by deep, moody shades of violet and indigo, which create a sense of nocturnal depth. Against this dark background, small, luminous circles of orange and red appear to float, suggesting celestial bodies or distant light sources. The application of paint is heavy, with visible brushwork and layering that gives the surface a tactile quality. The contrast between the murky, dark ground and the bright, circular accents provides a tension that is typical of Picabia's late-career output.
Unlike his earlier mechanical drawings or figurative works, this painting prioritises the physical presence of the medium. The lack of a clear subject invites the viewer to engage with the colour relationships and the density of the paint itself. It is a work that avoids easy categorisation, existing in the space between abstraction and suggestion. By stripping away narrative elements, Picabia forces a direct encounter with the materiality of the canvas. This print captures the depth of the original oil application, preserving the subtle variations in tone that define the work's atmospheric quality. It is a piece that rewards close observation, revealing its complexities through the interplay of shadow and light.
