A striking 1908 oil painting by Félix Vallotton, featuring a reclining nude figure rendered with flat planes of colour and precise, modern lines.
Félix Vallotton, a Swiss-born painter associated with the Nabis group in Paris, produced Sleep in 1908. This work demonstrates his characteristic approach to the female nude, which often eschews the soft, romanticised brushwork of his contemporaries in favour of a clinical, almost detached precision. The composition is stark and deliberate, focusing on the figure of a woman resting on a large, dark bed.
The painting is defined by its flat planes of colour and a lack of traditional modelling. The woman's skin is rendered in cool, pale tones, which contrast sharply against the deep, saturated violet of the bedspread. Two bright red cushions provide a secondary point of visual tension, pulling the eye across the frame. In the lower corner, a small, open book lies discarded, suggesting a moment of sudden fatigue or the cessation of activity.
Vallotton was known for his interest in photography and the graphic arts, and this influence is visible in the crisp outlines and the simplified, almost poster-like quality of the forms. The perspective is slightly flattened, pushing the subject toward the foreground and creating a sense of intimacy that feels voyeuristic rather than sentimental. The absence of decorative detail forces the viewer to engage directly with the geometry of the body and the arrangement of the surrounding objects. This work is a clear example of the artist's transition into a more austere, modern aesthetic that would influence later movements, including New Objectivity. The painting remains a study in colour balance and spatial economy, stripped of unnecessary narrative elements to focus on the quiet, static nature of the scene.
