A woodblock print from Aikawa Minwa's 1814 'Manga hyakujo', documenting the traditional weaving practices of women in Edo-period Japan.
This woodblock print originates from the 1814 publication 'Manga hyakujo', or 'Sketchbook of One Hundred Women', by the Japanese artist Aikawa Minwa. The work belongs to the Ukiyo-e tradition, which focused on scenes of daily life, popular culture, and the activities of common people during the Edo period. Minwa, a student of the Kano school, applied a disciplined approach to these illustrations, balancing technical precision with the observational quality typical of the era's genre studies.
The composition is divided into two distinct panels, each documenting the labour of weaving. On the left, a woman manages a spool, while the right panel depicts a weaver operating a traditional loom. The artist employs a restrained palette, using soft washes of colour to complement the clean, calligraphic ink lines. This approach allows the viewer to focus on the mechanics of the tools and the posture of the figures. The perspective is flattened, a common characteristic of Japanese printmaking that prioritises the clarity of the narrative over three-dimensional depth.
'Manga hyakujo' serves as a visual record of domestic and industrial tasks performed by women in early nineteenth-century Japan. By documenting these specific movements and tools, Minwa provides a glimpse into the textile production methods of the time. The print is notable for its economy of line and the gentle, observational tone that defines the artist's style. It is a representative example of how woodblock printing functioned as both an artistic medium and a means of disseminating information about contemporary life. The paper texture and the subtle ageing of the ink contribute to the historical character of the piece, making it a quiet addition to any collection focused on Japanese art or the history of craft.
