A detailed engraving depicting six saints, including Saint Sebastian, rendered with the formal precision characteristic of the Venetian Renaissance.
This engraving depicts a gathering of six saints, a composition often associated with the Venetian school of the sixteenth century. The figures are arranged in a frieze-like manner, a common device in Renaissance art to present multiple holy individuals within a single frame. On the far left, Saint Sebastian is identifiable by the arrow piercing his torso, his posture echoing classical sculpture. Beside him, a Franciscan friar holds a cross, while a central bishop in full ecclesiastical vestments commands the scene with a crozier. The group includes other figures in monastic or scholarly attire, creating a narrative of devotion and ecclesiastical authority.
The technique relies on parallel hatching and cross-hatching to define form and shadow. The artist uses these lines to model the heavy folds of the drapery and the musculature of the figures. The background is kept relatively simple, with horizontal lines suggesting a wall or a shallow space, which directs the viewer's attention to the interaction between the saints. The bishop's cope is particularly detailed, featuring small embroidered figures that demonstrate the precision possible within the medium of engraving.
While Titian is primarily known for his mastery of oil paint and colour, his influence extended to the print medium through collaborations with engravers such as Giovanni Battista Fontana or others within his circle. This work reflects the formal qualities of Venetian design, prioritising the weight and presence of the human figure. The composition avoids excessive ornamentation, focusing instead on the gravity of the subjects. It provides a clear example of how religious iconography was disseminated through prints during the Renaissance, allowing collectors and students to study the compositions of major masters without needing access to the original paintings.
