This fan painting by Ju Chao captures the life cycle of the silkworm with precision and restraint. The composition is arranged in the traditional fan format, a popular medium for literati artists in nineteenth-century China. Ju Chao, a member of the Guangdong school of painting, was known for his observation of nature and his ability to render small creatures and plants with a light, fluid touch.
The work features a cluster of silkworms feeding upon mulberry leaves, rendered in soft washes of green and blue-grey. The artist employs a technique that balances ink wash with delicate colour application, allowing the texture of the paper to remain visible. To the left, two moths are depicted with fine, calligraphic lines, providing a sense of movement and completion to the biological narrative. The negative space surrounding the subjects is intentional, typical of the aesthetic values found in Chinese ink painting, where the absence of detail allows the viewer to focus on the essential forms.
Ju Chao often utilised the 'boneless' method, or moku, which avoids heavy outlines in favour of colour washes to define shape and volume. This approach gives the leaves a soft, organic quality. The inclusion of calligraphic inscriptions and red seals provides a formal balance to the composition, grounding the naturalistic subject matter within the tradition of scholarly art. This print preserves the subtle tonal shifts of the original ink and pigment, offering a clear view of the artist's brushwork. It is a study of the quiet, cyclical processes of the natural world, presented with the technical discipline characteristic of the Lingnan region's artistic output during the Qing dynasty.
