A seventeenth-century woodcut by Christoffel Jegher, based on a design by Peter Paul Rubens, depicting the mythological figure Silenus supported by a satyr and a faun.
This woodcut by Christoffel Jegher depicts the mythological figure Silenus, the tutor and companion to Bacchus, supported by a satyr and a faun. The composition is based on a design by Peter Paul Rubens, whose collaboration with Jegher allowed for the translation of painterly qualities into the medium of woodcut. Jegher was a master of the craft, employing varied line weights to replicate the muscularity and volume characteristic of the Flemish Baroque style.
The figures occupy the foreground, their forms rendered with heavy, confident lines that define the anatomy and the weight of their movement. Silenus, portrayed as an elderly, corpulent figure, leans heavily upon his companions. The satyr, positioned behind him, provides support, while the faun assists from the side. The background remains relatively sparse, featuring a simple horizon line, a few trees, and clouds, which directs the viewer's attention to the physical interaction between the three figures.
Technically, the print demonstrates the capabilities of the woodcut medium during the seventeenth century. Jegher used hatching and cross-hatching to create shadows and depth, successfully mimicking the tonal range of a drawing or painting. The inscription at the bottom, 'CVM PRIVILEGIIS', refers to the legal protection granted to the publisher against unauthorised copies. This work is a clear example of the professional relationship between Rubens and his printmakers, where the artist provided the composition and the engraver executed the final block. The print captures the dynamic energy and physical presence typical of Rubens's mythological subjects, presented here through the precise, tactile nature of woodblock printing.
